Newspaper coverage from 1876 described the benches as made of “pine and black walnut oiled.” The original pews were long gone when restoration was undertaken in 1970, but with help from a former Adas Israel congregant, the Jewish Historical Society located one in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Two others were donated by Turner Memorial AME Church, which, in 1951, had purchased Adas Israel’s successor synagogue at Sixth and I Streets and the benches along with it.
