Holy Ark

The woodwork of the Aron Hakodesh, the Holy Ark in which the Torah is stored, is original. The Ark survived not only the successive reconfiguration of the building, but also the indignity of being used for a time as a broom closet. The restored Hebrew inscription in gold leaf above it is a verse from the Book of Numbers that translates, “How goodly are your tents, O Jacob; your places of worship, O Israel.” The red velvet parokhet—the curtain that covers the ark—and the Ten Commandments above it also are reproductions, based on 1876 newspaper accounts of the synagogue's dedication.
