Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson (D-WA) served in Congress from 1941 to 1983. He worked tirelessly to fight the human rights violations of Soviet Union and was the Senate sponsor of Jackson-Vanik Amendment. Upon the 30th anniversary of the legislation’s passing, Jerusalem’s mayor, Ehud Olmert, described Jackson as “a leader, a pacesetter and an inspiration for all.”
