David J. Fitzmaurice
David J. Fitzmaurice, Secretary-Treasurer of the International Union of Electrical Workers, first showed his alliance with the Soviet Jewry movement in 1970 by raising the Israeli flag at the union’s headquarters across the street from the Soviet Embassy. Although he was arrested, his support did not waver and he frequently attended the vigil in the following years. Fitzmaurice was elected IUE president in 1976. He died in 1982.
