That Obnoxious Order
During his 1868 campaign for the presidency, General Orders No. 11 haunted Grant. While he never publicly apologized for the decision, he referred privately to it as “that obnoxious order.”
In 1876, Grant attended the dedication of Adas Israel synagogue in Washington, D.C. He remained for the entire three-hour service and made a ten-dollar donation to the synagogue’s building fund.
