Jubilation and Sorrow
Dr. Charles Liebermann: At Lincoln’s Bedside
The mortally wounded Lincoln was carried from Ford’s Theatre across the street to William Peterson’s boarding house. There, several doctors, including Dr. Charles Liebermann, attended the President on his deathbed.
Born in Russia, Charles Liebermann had practiced medicine in Washington since 1840. A successful surgeon and founding member of the Georgetown University medical department, Liebermann was President of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia at the time of Lincoln’s assassination.
Dr. Liebermann removed a lock of hair from the area of Lincoln's head near the wound. Surgeon General Joseph K. Barnes later presented a lock to Mary Todd Lincoln, at her request.
