Jewish Community Mourns
Jews shared in the nation’s sorrow. Isaac Leeser, hazzan (cantor) of Philadelphia’s Mikveh Israel and one of the leading Jewish scholars of the day, came to the nation’s capital to lead a memorial service at Washington Hebrew. In Alexandria, Rabbi H. Heilbroun officiated at Beth El’s memorial service.
President Lincoln’s funeral procession from the White House to the Capitol on April 19, 1865, included more than 30,000 mourners.
Philp & Solomons hung this image of President Lincoln and his son Tad in their window in tribute to the fallen President. Above hung a sign reading: “Treason has done its worst.”
One hundred twenty-five members of the Washington Hebrew Congregation marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in President Lincoln’s funeral procession on April 19, 1865.
The Lansburgh brothers, owners of the fancy goods store Baltimore House, made a $500 donation towards one of the nation’s first monuments to the memory of President Lincoln. The statue still stands at Fourth and D Streets, NW.
