Yarmulke, Tefillin Bag, Tefillin, 1870s-1880s
Leon Poppers used these ritual objects while praying at Adas Israel’s first synagogue at 6th and G Streets, NW. An emigrant from Holland, Poppers was an early and active member of the congregation. Poppers’ great-grandson, Dr. Gerald Aurbach, became a world-renowned physician scientist and maintained the family’s link to the Adas Israel Congregation.
