Education & Kids:
Jewish American Heritage Month Resources

Local Stories, a poster series with student and teacher resources, is available to help teach about Jewish American Heritage Month.

A Dream Comes True:
Washington-area Teens and the Birth of Israel (1948)

The 24” x 36” poster highlights the Washington Jewish community's celebration outside the Jewish Agency building on Massachusetts Avenue on May 14, 1948. A Dream Comes True posterFollowing the declaration of Israel's independence and President Truman's swift recognization of the State, the gathered crowd sang, prayed, and danced.

The accompanying resources focus on the importance of teen social activism both then and now, and the role that Washington-area teens played in rallying public support of the new State.  The resources help students relate to the actions and emotions of teens sixty years ago by analyzing primary source photographs, discussion questions, oral history excerpts, and historical background. Three suggested activities help students relate activism in the 1940s to modern causes by brainstorming ways to advance particular causes, designing protest stickers, and preserving oral histories about important historic events.

The poster and resources are available free of cost if folded and mailed flat. (Up to 5 copies are available for free.  Additional copies are available for $2/poster S&H.)  Copies mailed in poster tubes will be available for $5.

For more information on the role Washingtonians played in lobbying for the creation of the State of Israel, or to order your FREE copy of the poster, please email poster@jhsgw.org.
